Hand Building

Hand Built Pottery

"Hand building" is working with clay by hand using only simple tools, not the pottery wheel. Before potters had the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots and clay forms using clay, their hands and fingers, and basic hand tools.

While hand building is as simple as using your hands to form an object out of clay, it encompasses three main techniques and forming methods. Using these three techniques, pinching, coiling, and slab building, you can make just about anything out of clay.

The best thing about hand building is anyone can be successful and it does not take hours to learn. It is also very satisfying and therapeutic.
