Raku

Raku

Raku is a low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western raku involves removing pottery from the kiln while it is bright red and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the container is closed which reduces the amount of oxygen in the closed container. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors of the special glazes and clay bodies. The results are amazingly unpredictable which is why many pottery become entrancement by raku.

This workshop is only available to adults due to the risks associated with handling red hot pottery but don't let that stop you. This workshop can be a source of exhilaration and greatly satisfying. Many participant repeat the experience because it is so rewarding.
